Level 5 Award in Understanding Hydraulic Principles in The Water Industry – Learning & Development Associates
The key concepts required for anyone involved in the maintenance and management of water hydraulic systems are complex in nature and will vary by role.

Learning & Development Associates has substantial experience in designing and developing flexible role-focused, bespoke technical training interventions, which provide participants from varied backgrounds with the necessary skills to undertake Hydraulic assessments at a level appropriate to their roles.

Given the technical nature of the subject area, the learning approach allows individuals to learn flexibly at their own pace. This involves a progressive series of cycles: explanations of hydraulic concepts followed by relevant practice of hydraulic calculations. The focus of the Qualifcation is very pragmatic, culminating in the use of ‘real life’ hydraulic scenarios (e.g. incidents or planned jobs) directly relevant to everyday work responsibilities and referencing internal company procedures as appropriate.

Overview of the Qualification – Main Themes

  • Understand hydraulic principles in relation to the water industry
  • Understand the hydraulic principles of open channel flow and its application in the water industry
  • Explain the application and importance of hydraulics within the water industry
  • Apply and convert SI units and perform essential arithmetical operations for hydraulic calculations
  • Explain fundamental Hydraulic principles including the Continuity Equation, hydraulic forces, Bernoulli energy conservation and energy friction losses
  • Explain Pump Curves and System Curves
  • Demonstrate the appropriate application of hydraulic principles across a range of water industry applications and uses, including a scenario exercise
  • Understand the hydraulic principles of open channel flow and its application in the water industry

Assessment

Candidates must demonstrate the level of knowledge and/or skills described in the units. Assessment is the process of measuring a candidate’s knowledge and understanding against the standards set in the qualification. Each candidate is required to produce evidence which demonstrates their achievement of all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.

Upon successful completion of their qualification, learners are able to progress to further learning within the suite of Water Level 5 Qualifications – i.e. completing an Award or Certificate and topping up to Foundation Degree and on to Honours Degree.

Learners may also wish to further their ongoing personal and professional development by accessing other qualifications.
