Technical Introduction to the Water Industry

Welcome to our suite of training courses that seek to address the acquisition and development of the knowledge and skills required to operate, supervise, manage and lead the water industry workforce in a variety of settings.

Each module is 2 days and there are two distinct pathways (units) that target operational functions in a water company.
Each module (2 days) and each unit (1 day) is stand alone and can be accredited.
The Advanced Applied units are well suited to field technicians, and the Advanced Professional are well suited to operational managers.

The Technical Introduction to the Water Industry Courses – Guidance

The new Technical Introduction to the Water Industry courses are aimed at learners from both the Water Industry Field Organisation and also at higher level Water Industry Managers.
There are two distinct courses:

Advanced Applied – Equivalent to Level 3 (Field Organisation)
Advanced Professional – Equivalent to Level 5 (Managers)

Each of the Advanced Applied and Advanced Professional courses has two 2-day duration Modules each;

A Water Module – Module 1 – addressing the knowledge requirements of the Water Production and Water Network functions – either at Applied or Professional levels
A Wastewater Module – Module 2 – addressing the knowledge requirements of the Wastewater Network and Wastewater Treatment functions – either at Applied or Professional levels

The Technical Introduction to the Water Industry L&DA Certificate of Achievement

There are three options for learners to attain the Technical Introduction to the Water Industry L&DA Certificate of Achievement or Certificate of Completion\\:

To achieve the full Technical Introduction to the Water Industry L&DA Certificate of Achievement, learners must achieve both the Water Module 1 and Wastewater Module 2 at either the Applied or Professional level. This would constitute a 4-day duration course.
It is possible to undertake one of either the Water or Wastewater Modules at either level. This would allow learners from UK Water Only Companies to undertake just the Water Modules (Module 1), for example, who, upon successful completion, would be awarded a Certificate of Completion for a single Module. This would constitute a 2-day duration course.
The Technical Introduction to the Water Industry L&DA Certificate of Achievement can alternatively be awarded to learners who undertake both Modules in the same discipline; that is, either Water or Wastewater
- - A combination of the Advanced Applied plus the Advanced Professional Modules – Water Modules 1
  - A combination of the Advanced Applied plus the Advanced Professional Modules – Wastewater Modules 2

Questions about me as a learner

Who are these courses designed for?

The courses are suitable for early-career professionals, employees moving into new roles and teams who need a broader understanding of water industry operations.

Do I need previous water industry experience?

No previous industry experience is required. The programme provides a structured technical introduction while also supporting experienced staff who want to strengthen their cross-disciplinary knowledge.

I work in a Water Only Company (a WOC), so I don’t need training on the Wastewater business. What are my options?

The course is flexible, so if you only want to develop your understanding of the clean water side of the water industry, you can complete the Water Module only. This includes the Water Production and Water Networks units.

Questions about the structure of the course

What is the difference between the two pathways?

Advanced Applied is particularly suited to field technicians and operational roles. Advanced Professional is aimed more toward operational managers, supervisors and those preparing for leadership responsibilities.

What is the difference between the Advanced Applied and the Advanced Professional?

Advanced Applied training is designed for employees who are new to the water industry and work at an operational level, such as water treatment operatives, or in a support function, such as customer service call centre operatives. Advanced Professional training is designed for employees involved in quality assurance, strategic planning, efficiency and incident prevention.

How long does each module take?

Each module takes two days and contains two one-day units. The Water and Wastewater modules can be selected according to the needs of the learner or organisation.

Can modules and units be taken separately?

Yes. Each two-day module and each individual one-day unit can stand alone and may be accredited separately.

Who will teach the course?

All of our Trainers are qualified teachers and assessors with extensive experience of teaching and assessing national qualifications L&DA delivers to the UK Water Industry.

How will my knowledge be assessed?

Your knowledge is assessed using our Knowledge Assessment Tool (KAT®). You can try an example KAT assessment to see how it works.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes. You can choose the units or modules you wish to complete, and your certificate will be awarded when you successfully complete the course. Your certificate will list the units or modules you have achieved.

What is the price of a course?

The price depends on the number of units and modules you choose and whether you select face-to-face, virtual or online training. Please contact us to discuss your training needs and how the Technical Introduction to the Water Industry can meet them.

What is the price of a module?

A module consists of two days or units of training. For individuals, face-to-face training costs £350, plus a £100 registration and certification fee. Virtual training costs £267, plus a £100 registration and certification fee. For companies, face-to-face training costs £2,100 per module, plus a £100 registration and certification fee per person.

Questions about L&DA and further opportunities for study

Who are ProQual?

ProQual is a national awarding body. It is independent of Learning and Development Associates and accredits the training course. ProQual provides nationally recognised certification for the course.

Do L&DA offer any progression learning beyond the TIWI?

Yes. We offer a range of nationally accredited qualifications that support progression beyond the TIWI. These qualifications are registered on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, which is overseen by Ofqual, and have international currency. Progression options include:
